The John W. Ryan Fellowship for International Education is awarded annually by The State University of New York to a prominent scholar, leader or practitioner whose contribution to international education is exemplary.

Spending twelve months in residence at a State University of New York campus, the John W. Ryan Fellow's work will contribute to the idea that international education is a crucial element in international relations and can profoundly impact relationships among nations. Candidates for the fellowship may work directly in academia and educational administration, or may conduct research in a related field of importance to international education. To cultivate the University's priority in internationalizing its campuses and providing opportunities for international experiences for its students and faculty, the fellowship is ideally bestowed to candidates from other countries.

Fellowship Activities

The John W. Ryan Fellow is provided with a furnished office, computer and access to libraries and research facilities as needed for his or her work. Projects and research may build on one's own previous work, or the fellowship residency may be used to explore a new direction or concept. The fellow is encouraged to seek to publish his or her work in conjunction with The State University of New York Press, also known as SUNY Press. In fact, Dr. Kemal Guruz, the first John w. Ryan Fellow (2004-05) produced a text during his tenure entitle Higher Education and International Student Mobility in the Global Knowledge Economy. We are currently working with SUNY Press to publish this manuscript.

To share ideas and stimulate discourse, each fellow delivers a minimum of six lectures, colloquia or other type of presentation, to a variety of audiences which include the State University community as well as important public figures, scholars from other universities and the general public. Presentation venues vary as follows:

• One lecture at the Neil D. Levin Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce in New York City;
  
  
• One lecture at each of the four research centers of The State University of New York: Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook;
  
  
• One lecture at a location to be selected by the fellow, in consultation with the campus of residence and the System Administration Office of International Programs.
  
  
• The fellow is also given the opportunity to work with students directly, in conducting a graduate seminar in international education at the fellow's campus of residence.
  
  
• Depending on the fellow's field, the seminar may be focused on a specialization having a direct or indirect impact on international education or international relations.
  
  

In recognition of his or her significant expertise in the overall field or specific aspects of international education, the John W. Ryan Fellow serves as a senior counselor on international education to the Chancellor of the university and is available to the campuses for advice and consultation.

While primarily working with campuses of The State University of New York, the fellow is also encouraged to participate in related activities throughout the state and country, and to create and expand a wide network of contacts and resources in the field.
